Henry and Doris Levant were early residents of Reseda. In the early 50's, as they were raising their family, they built and operated the Reseda Bowl. Henry's vision was to create a sense of community and family. The Levants lived directly behind the bowl in an old Spanish style home on Darby street. As Reseda grew, their home and the bowl, which is located at 6642 Reseda, became a center of family life. Kids spent many weekends and summers learning to bowl. Hundreds of leagues competed over the years. One of the first day care centers in the valley was operated by the bowl so mom's could compete in leagues and catch a little time for themselves. The Levant family travel agency, Reseda Travel, was founded and booked hundreds of vacations for Valley residents, especially to Hawaii.
By the late 80's, Henry had passed, the bowl had closed and had fallen into disrepair. In 1991 Glen Levant, Henry's son and an LAPD Commander who eventually took leadership of D.A.R.E America, negotiated the sale of the Bowl to the Valley Vineyard Church. Although the Levants were Jewish and had several buyers lined up, they believed the vision of the Valley Vineyard best fit their dad's vision of positively impacting Reseda. The Vineyard put almost one million dollars into renovating the building. Since then, the Vineyard has served Reseda in many ways. For twenty years the Manna food pantry has provided thousands of families with meals and loving prayer support. During the Northridge quake, the Vineyard provided meals, blankets, and emotional support to the thousands who flocked to Reseda Park. Years ago, the Vineyard launched Mission Reseda which was based in the Great Commandment, "Love thy neighbor...". Love became tangible as houses were painted, alleys were cleaned up, homeowners were served in various ways, and members of the Valley Vineyard visited most of the homes in Reseda in order to offer encouragement and prayer. Block parties were held and neighbors who barely knew one another became friends. A great deal of coordination with other agencies, especially the LAPD and Councilman Zine's office, resulted in a more effective community effort. Mission Reseda recently evolved into "The Neighborhood Initiative," a city wide movement that is just now beginning to impact LA and other communities throughout the U.S. Reseda has changed dramatically since the Levants put down roots, but the Vineyard continues to believe that God loves Reseda and wants to help us improve the quality of the life here in the heart of the Valley.
